Three Diet Mistakes that Hurt Your Skin

One of the most popular New Year’s Eve resolutions is to lose weight, eat healthier and make better dieting decisions. Resolution or not, we should all watch what we consume because our diet is closely related to our skin. Here are three parts of your diet you should keep a close eye on:

  1. Sodium Intake– Not only has iodized salt been linked to breakouts, but a sodium-heavy meal can cause our bodies to retain water. This can cause swelling in both our fingers and our face, and discoloration in the circles under our eyes.
  2. Empty Carbs- Candy, bread and pasta are all of our favorites, but they can also cause your blood sugar to spike, unleashing hormones. These hormones stimulate oil production. High-sugar diets also break down collagen and elastin, which loosens your skin.
  3. Over Drinking- You may want to skip the extra glass of champagne, since heavy drinking can dull and dry your skin through dehydration. Drinking too much can dissolve vitamin A in your body, which is a vitamin that repairs your skin through collagen. Alcohol can also trigger flare-ups in skin conditions of some people.

Many people don’t realize their skin is connected to their diet. It is important to be mindful of how you treat your body for both your health and your skin’s sake. If you have any questions or concerns about your skin, you should speak to a dermatologist.
